It was a really busy week for us, and finally we are back to Zagreb. Today we interview Croatian political elites and use the rest of the day to make other pictures of monuments in Croatian capital.

Cross-border memory of the war(s)

It was a packed day of driving across the wide Vojvodina plains, chatting with memory scholar Todor Kuljic and tracking down a wide variety of monuments from WW2 to the wars of the 1990s. The double dose of morning coffee helped us recover after a typical night of "fieldwork" in Belgrade and we found enormous monumental works commemorating the Partisan struggle and small, practically hidden local memorials in dusty villages. The imposing Vukovar water tower represented our final site of memory for the day before collapsing in Nova Gradiska.

It's very cold today in Zagreb and my agenda for the day is fully packed. I had several interviews with local historians, NGOs and political elites. I also managed to squeeze in a visit to exhibit "Dr(u)go sjecanje" - an initiative of  Barbara Blasin (designer) and Aneta Lalic (sociologist). Now heading to a book presentation: "Strategije simbolične izgradnje nacije u državama jugoistočne Europe" [ur. Vjeran Pavlaković and Goran Korov].

#Zagreb2Belgrade, on a memory tour

Few months ago, Vjeran and I were sitting in a noisy brasserie in Brussels. We know each other for some time now, and over the past years we have been doing a lot of research on collective memories and identities in both Croatia and Serbia. We started talking about Vjeran's current project FRAMNAT and my upcoming trip to Croatia in the framework of my thesis. And then we had an amazing idea: to organize a road trip from Zagreb to Belgrade - a sort of memory trip which ties and divides Croatia and Serbia, the past and the present, then and now.
During the trip we shall be interviewing state- and non-state actors, local academia and the visitors of Jasenovac commemoration to be held on 23rd of April (2017).
The #ZG2BG road trip starts this week. Hope you will able to "virtually" join us and follow us as we drive on the highway of "Unity and brotherhood".
