Research Project: Death MathLives matter, The multi-faceted status of death tallies—actual and projected, given and made—is the focus of this research.
Death math unwinds a complex relationship between the collective memory and mass victimisation examining how public memory engages with numbers. Death math examines how human losses are located in numbers, and makes an original contribution to the blooming field of memory studies by stimulating cross-disciplinary debate and exchange on mortality in historical memory research. |
Objectives
Through an evincing set of activities and scientific outcomes that will be both impactful and sustainable, the project will focus on the following specific objectives (SO):
§ SO1. Exploring the evolution of the ‘politics of numbers' and its implications for public and private memory and knowledge about the past
§ SO2. Analyzing how numbers allocated to the human loss serve to (de)legitimize the past;
§ SO3. Investigating narratives that contribute to / counter inflating or minimising mortality statistics and their implications;
